What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis occurs due to the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs from your heel to your toes. It’s one of the most common causes of heel pain that we see in our Rochester chiropractic clinic.

Patients often feel a stabbing pain in the heel and bottom of their feet, which gets stiffer after rest and sleeping.

Other symptoms include:

  • Pain with activity
  • Pain in the morning
  • Swelling in the heel or arch of the foot
  • Tenderness in the heel or arch of the foot
  • Stiffness in the heel or arch of the foot
  • Difficulty walking
  • Foot or heel pain with prolonged standing

Because most of us rely on healthy feet for numerous activities, finding comfort at the source of your symptoms is vital to your well-being.

With the right chiropractic care strategy, your foot’s function can be restored, and you can return to your active lifestyle.

Common Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis can stem from various causes due to the constant wear and tear on the plantar fascia ligaments.

Some of the most common causes and contributing factors of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Overly tight calf musculature (gastrocnemius and soleus) or poor flexibility in the calf muscle
  • Too much or too little movement of the joints in your foot
  • Your foot’s unique structure and mechanics, such as flat feet or high arches
  • Improper intrinsic foot muscle activation
  • Adhering to regular running or high-impact sports that necessitate repetitive pounding of the foot
  • Regular involvement in intense exercise
  • Lack of arch support
  • A sudden traumatic injury, often due to jumping
  • Standing for long periods, especially on hard surfaces
  • Pregnancy or carrying excessive weight
  • Age, as we lose elasticity in the plantar fascia as we get older
  • Wearing shoes that don't have enough cushioning, arch support, or bend in the ball of the foot

Many of these events or activities are unavoidable; however, our chiropractic services and guidance can help you find improved overall foot balance and give you the tools to better protect your feet.
